The Golden Cage
A modern stage version based on A.N. Ostrovsky’s play The Bondwomen.
The action is moved to the present day, yet Ostrovsky’s central theme still sounds sharp and recognizable: can a life of wealth, comfort and outward splendor truly be called happy if it has no real freedom?
Young Elena Andreyevna lives in the house of Yevdokim Yegorych Styrov, an influential and wealthy man. Around her there is luxury, care, impeccable order and visible prosperity. But little by little it becomes clear that this beautiful world is arranged like a cage. Possessiveness hides behind love, distrust hides behind care, and behind domestic peace there are surveillance and the fear of losing power over another person.
Elena’s meeting with Artemy Mulin awakens in her the hope for a feeling that seems genuine and saving. But the collision between dream and reality proves painful: ideals collapse, people reveal themselves to be different from the images created by imagination, and freedom turns out to be harder than it once seemed.
The Golden Cage is a performance about women’s lack of freedom, the power of money, self-deception, jealousy and human dignity. It is a story about how outward prosperity does not always bring happiness, and how the strongest cage is sometimes not made of iron, but of gold.
